Public resources available in California

Californians can apply for library cards at all major California public libraries. Applicants must apply in person for each card and show a valid California driver’s license.

Major library systems

Los Angeles County Library Library cards are available for free to permanent and temporary residents of California. The library provides online access to: Gale Virual Reference Library, Literature Resource Center, National Newspapers, Newspaper Source, Opposing Viewpoints and other ebook, music and video resources.  A list of resources is available online. 
Sacramento Public Library Library cards are available for free to residents of California. The library provides online access to Academic Journals, Newspapers, eBooks, media and much more.  A list of resources is available online.
San Diego Public Library The San Diego Public Library (SDPL) serves the informational, educational and recreational interests of San Diego through the Central Library, 35 branches, and an online program.  The library provides online access to: Gale Virual Reference Library, eBooks, eAudiobooks, eVideos and a Digital Archive of unusual and rare materials.  A list of resources is available online.
San Francisco Public Library Residents of California may obtain a library card for free.  Applications are available at the Main Library and all branches and are to be submitted in person.  The library provides online access to local and national newspapers, databases for research, eBooks, music, videos and much more.  A list of resources is available online.
